FAQS

WHEN IS A PERSON OBESE?

It is considered OVERWEIGHT when the Body Mass Index – BMI (weight in kilos divided by the square of the height in meters) is between 25 and 30, MILD OBESITY if the BMI is between 30 and 35, SEVERE OBESITY between 35 and 40, and MORBID OBESITY if the BMI is greater than 40.

WHEN SHOULD I CONSIDER HAVING SURGERY?

If the BMI is greater than 35 and has associated diseases, or if it is greater than 40 with or without comorbidities, and meets the criteria in the INDICATIONS section and does not present any of the contraindications mentioned, its solution involves a SURGICAL INTERVENTION.

If you suffer from type 2 DIABETES with poor metabolic control, or suffer from another major physical or psychological comorbidity, and have a BMI between 30 and 35, we can evaluate your case and analyze the benefits of Bariatric or Metabolic Diabetes Surgery.

WHY DO I HAVE TO HAVE SURGERY IF I'M FINE?

The goal of surgery is to improve health through controlled weight loss. Obesity is the cause of multiple diseases that develop over time in almost all patients, causing a worse quality of life and a shortening of it. If you are morbidly obese and do not yet have associated diseases, it is the best time to find a solution, so the surgical risk is lower. If you do not make the decision now that your health is not too affected, wait and see how these diseases appear, complicating and shortening your life.

WHEN SHOULD I NOT UNDERGO SURGERY?

If you present one of the CONTRAINDICATIONS or do not meet the criteria for SURGICAL INDICATION, you should not undergo this type of intervention. The indication for this intervention should not be trivialized, but neither should you intentionally gain 2 kg of weight so that your BMI is greater than 40 if the trajectory is clearly ascending despite controlled diets.

WHAT ECONOMIC COST DOES IT HAVE?

The cost of the procedure is standard according to the surgical technique, and Our OBESITY UNIT at the Quironsalud Valencia and Alicante Hospital offers a fixed FORFAIT that includes preoperative consultations and tests, intervention and hospital admission and follow-up by the entire team. during the first postoperative year. In the case of Revision or Conversion Surgeries, costs may vary depending on the tests and procedures to be performed.

IS THERE FINANCING AID?

The Hospital offers, through the Patient Manager, access to FINANCING of the procedure FOR TWO YEARS WITHOUT INTEREST. In the case of Insurance Companies, we will try to process the financing through you, reducing costs or even with complete coverage in certain cases.

WHERE DO I HAVE SURGERY?

We perform the interventions at the Quirónsalud Hospital of Valencia (Avda. Blasco Ibáñez 14, 46010 – Valencia), which meets all the necessary conditions and guarantees to successfully carry out this surgery. Both the latest technology medical and surgical material, as well as the auxiliary and nursing staff, the medical equipment involved and the rooms (clean, renovated and modern) are of our complete satisfaction and confidence.

HOW MANY DAYS DO I HAVE TO BE ADMITTED?

Normally the hospital stay is 24 hours, depending on the patient’s recovery and their place of origin within the same province or from another, or even from abroad. In certain cases we offer a FREE SURGERY program, in which the patient is discharged on the same day of the intervention.

Together with the Hospital, we can coordinate a temporary stay in a Hotel-Resort in the City or on the Coast to the liking of the patient and her companions for the first days after discharge until sufficient recovery to be able to fly back to their country of origin.

WILL I HAVE TO GO TO THE ICU AFTER THE PROCEDURE?

With some exceptions, patients recover well from anesthesia and go to their room, without the need for ICU.

WHAT IS THE BEST TECHNIQUE?

Each patient is different, and it is important to analyze each case individually to recommend one technique or another. The opinion of the patient, correctly informed, is very important. The best technique is the one that best adapts to the patient’s needs, because it will be the most successful in the long term.

IS WEIGHT LOSS FOREVER?

After surgery, weight is lost for a year to a year and a half, although the greatest loss occurs during the first 6 months. This weight loss is permanent, that is, forever. Sometimes you can regain some weight (around 5 kilos) in subsequent years. More significant weight gains are very rare and are usually due to lack of control in following or following the recommended dietary guidelines.

WHAT ARE THE RISKS OF UNDERGOING OBESITY SURGERY?

The risks are strictly described in the section of this website. This surgery is very safe in the environment of specialized multidisciplinary teams like ours.

There are risks, like any surgical intervention, although the risks are associated to a greater extent with the health conditions of the patients rather than with the surgical technique itself. In our hands the risk is lower than a gallbladder intervention or knee replacement.

Our special dedication since the early nineties has allowed us to reduce the risk of mortality to the levels of the best international hospitals, below 0.2%. Strict and intense follow-up during the postoperative period has minimized the number of complications such as wound, urine, or lung infections to practically zero.

With GASTRIC BYPASS or LAPAROSCOPIC VERTICAL GASTRECTOMY, iron or vitamin and mineral deficiencies are rare, and respond well to complementary treatment. They do not cause diarrhea like other surgical techniques, although it can be a little looser when eating foods with a lot of fat.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF UNDERGOING OBESITY SURGERY?

The objective of bariatric and Metabolic surgery is HEALTH, curing or improving diseases associated with obesity that shorten and condition the quality of life through controlled weight loss. Furthermore, this EFFORTLESS weight loss improves self-esteem, improves relationship life, sex life, physical activity, work life, etc. OBESITY SURGERY changes the lives of patients. When we ask patients if they would have surgery again, they respond that I WISH THEY HAD DONE IT BEFORE.

AFTER THE OPERATION, WILL I HAVE TO GO ON A STRICT DIET?

It is not about going on a diet, but about learning and adapting to healthy dietary habits, recommended for anyone, whether or not they have surgery. It is true that, initially, the quantities ingested are much smaller. This should not worry the people around you, since over time the gastric reservoir dilates a little, allowing somewhat larger intakes. However, the normal thing is to eat everything, in small quantities, and spread over several meals. Because of the way you eat, no one will ever know if you have surgery.

COULD YOU TALK TO A PATIENT TO TELL ME ABOUT THEIR EXPERIENCE?

Our patients are usually happy to share their POSITIVE experience with other patients, both in the Outpatient Clinics and in the Hospital. In fact, it is common for patients-friends to come to visit those who have just undergone surgery at the hospital, and even out-of-hospital friendships are made. Through the QUESTIONS section, contacts can be facilitated, always preserving the privacy and anonymity of the patient who so wishes. On SOCIAL MEDIA (FACEBOOK, INSTAGRAM, YOUTUBE,…) there are testimonies from patients who underwent surgery, each with their particular vision and problem resolution.
